Laws and regulation
In Botswana, the gambling market is regulated by the state regulator (Gambling Authority), created by the relevant law and accountable to the government.
In the legal field - land casinos, betting points, bingo/draws and the national lottery; each format requires a separate license.
Conditions include verification of beneficiaries and sources of funds ("fit & proper"), responsible game plans (18 +, self-exclusion, informing), technical certification of equipment, accounting and reporting requirements, as well as strict AML/CFT procedures in coordination with financial monitoring.
Advertising is limited, with a ban on audiences under 18 and mandatory warnings.
Compliance is monitored through inspections, audits and sanctions up to suspension/revocation of license and fines.
There is no separate regime for online casinos and remote bets: local licenses for online are not issued, targeting of residents in digital channels is considered unlicensed activity and entails measures of influence.
For operators - "compliance-by-design" and geoblock, for users - a guideline only for licensed ground offers.
