Culture and history

The history of Malawi dates back to the power of Marawi and the Bantu migrations, followed by the period of the British protectorate of Nyasaland and independence on July 6, 1964.

The era of one-party rule was replaced by multi-party democracy in 1994, which formed a modern political culture.

The cultural code is built around the Chicheva language (along with English), as well as the traditions of the Yao, Tumbuka, Lomwe, etc.

Lake Malawi is the axis of everyday life: fishing, canoe boats, songs and fish markets (including "chambo") have given everyday life characteristic features.

Expressive heritage symbols are the Gule Vamkulu mask ritual at the Chewa and the Vimbuz healing dance at the Tumbuka; they are joined by malipenga and mganda male dances.

In crafts, wood carving (masks, sculpture), basket weaving, ceramics and reading fabrics are strong.

World-significant objects are Chongoni rocks with ancient paintings and a lake national park.

The contemporary scene is concentrated in Lilongwe and Blantyre: festivals, Afropop and gospel, street art and film combine tradition with urban creativity.
