Culture and history

South Sudan is one of the youngest countries in the world, having declared independence in 2011.

The cultural roots of the region go to the peoples of the Nilotic group (Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk, etc.), whose life is historically associated with the Nile, cattle breeding and seasonal migrations.

The colonial era and subsequent decades of a united Sudan left a complex political and cultural legacy; young statehood is accompanied by nation-building and restoration processes.

The cultural fabric is multilingual: official English is adjacent to Juba Arabic as the language of everyday communication and many local languages.

The creed combines Christian denominations with traditional beliefs and rites.

Music and dance are important markers of identity (drum rhythms, vocal choirs, shepherd's songs); wrestling and traditional festivals are popular.

Crafts include wood carving, basket weaving, beaded jewelry; the kitchen relies on sorghum/millet, corn, fish, and dairy products.

Despite challenges, communal mutual assistance, respect for elders, oral tradition and a rich ritual culture form a stable core of national identity.
