Culture and history
Thailand has historically combined strict public morality with a steady "household" craving for luck.
Buddhist ethics condemns excitement, so the state left legal only "socially acceptable" forms - a lottery and betting on races, while most other games are supplanted in private and underground formats.
In cities (Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai), gambling practices manifest themselves through a club and entertainment scene without a casino, while folk culture supports betting around Muay Thai fights and sporting events.
The lottery has become a mass ritual with its own superstitions and symbolism of numbers, and holidays like Songkran increase interest in "luck" and practical jokes.
The public debate remains cautious: the priority is responsibility, the protection of vulnerable groups and the fight against illegal traffic, which forms a restrained marketing style and the communitarian tone of the industry.
