Culture and history
Syria is one of the oldest cultural centers of the Levant, where urban life has revolved around bazaars and coffee houses for centuries.
In everyday life, "peaceful" entertainment was entrenched - backgammon (tawla), chess, dominoes and card games as a form of communication, but not as money excitement.
Confessional diversity (Muslim communities, Christian and Druze) and religious and moral norms have formed a steadily restrained attitude towards betting and casinos.
In modern times, this attitude has been fixed by legal prohibitions: only the state lottery is legally perceived, while casinos and bookmaking are excluded from public culture.
The military and economic turmoil of recent decades has narrowed the leisure space, strengthening the focus on family formats, coffee shops and cultural practices without monetary risk.
The general cultural vector is social leisure, responsibility and minimization of the gambling component.
