Laws and regulation
Australia's legal model is two-tiered.
The federal level sets the frame for the Interactive Gambling Act 2001: online casinos and poker for players from Australia are prohibited, only online betting on sports and sweepstakes from licensed operators are allowed (live betting via the Internet is prohibited; allowed by phone/points).
Supervision over the execution and blocking of illegal sites is carried out by ACMA, financial monitoring and AML/CTF - AUSTRAC.
There are nationwide protection measures: 18 +, pre-game verification, BetStop (national self-exclusion register), advertising restrictions (especially during broadcasts) and a ban on paying with credit cards for online betting (except lotteries).
States and territories issue licenses and control offline casinos, betting stations, bingo and slot machines, and also apply point-of-consumption tax (POCT) to online betting.
Technical certification, KYC, limits and responsible play tools required; for violations, fines, blocking and revocation of licenses are provided.
This architecture combines a strong federal ban on interactive casinos with licensed betting and strong consumer oversight.
