How to determine the optimal session duration
1) What is "optimal duration"
The optimal duration is the number of attempts (or minutes) at which you achieve your goal (playtime, wagering, hit hunting) with an acceptable risk of drawdown and fit into the budget. This is not a maximum of time, but a balance between turnover, volatility and psychology.
2) Base: duration ↔ turnover ↔ waiting
Turnover = Rate × Number of attempts (spin/giveaway).
Expected total ≈ − edge × Sales volume, where edge = 1 − RTP (in fractions).
Rate = attempts per minute (P/min). Then in T minutes:- Sales Volume (T) = Rate × P/min × T.
- Consequence: the longer and faster the session, the greater the turnover and expected losses (with EV <0).
3) Consider the volatility and rhythm of the game
Low volatility (frequent small winnings): longer sessions are acceptable.
Medium: moderate duration.
High (rare major hits, bonus purchase): Short sessions are preferred due to deep episodes without payoffs.
Hit Frequency (h) sets the "rhythm": at h low, increase the pauses and shorten T.
4) We determine the goal and from it - the duration
1. Playtime and stability. Do you want to ~ an hour of quiet play → average volatility, rate ~ 1% BR, moderate speed.
2. Hunt for a hit. Short windows (30-60 min) on high-vol, bid 0. 25–0. 75% BR, fewer auto-spins.
3. Winning bonus. Break the vager into multiple sessions with rate limit and progress control.
5) Mini duration calculators
Budget plan:- Set the loss budget B (for example, 20% of the in-session bank).
- Then the target turnover is'Turnover _ target ≈ B/edge '.
- Duration: 'T ≈ Turnover_target/( Rate × P/min)'.
- Specify'N 'spins → 'T ≈ N/( P/min)'.
- With hit-frequency 'h', the probability k of empty consecutive ≈ '(1 − h) ^ k'. If at the selected 'T' and bet such a series knocks you to SL - reduce T or bet share.
Example: RTP slot 96% (edge 4%), rate 2 cu, speed 12 sp/min, loss budget B = 40 cu.
`Turnover_target ≈ 40 / 0. 04 = 1000 cu '→' T ≈ 1000/( 2 × 12) ≈ 41. 7 minutes'
6) Psychology and the "price of the hour"
Fast auto-spin raises the price of an hour: 'Loss _ hour ≈ edge × Bet × P/min × 60'.
Fatigue increases tilt and mistakes (switching games, rising rates). It is better to have several short sessions with pauses than one long one.
7) Landmarks by duration (adjust for yourself)
Slots (average volatility): 45-90 minutes or 600-1000 spins.
High-Vol slots: 30-60 minutes or 300-600 spins; pause 15-30 minutes.
Roulette/blackjack (no turbo-tempo): 45-75 minutes, micropause every 15-20 minutes.
Sports (pre-match): package 1-3 bets and revision; live - windows for 10-20 minutes.
8) Stop rules to end a session
Stop loss (SL):- High-Vol: − 30... − 40% of the session budget.
- Medium: −20%.
- High-Vol: +60…+150%.
- Medium: +30%.
- The session ends in time, SL or TP - whichever comes first.
9) Impact of rate size
Rate as% of current BR:- High-Vol: 0. 25–0. 75% BR;
- Mean: ~ 1% BR;
- Low/1: 1: 1-2% BR.
- A smaller share makes it possible to play safely at the same speed longer without overclocking RoR.
10) Bonuses and vager: play "in pieces"
Play = big turn ⇒ break it into series:- Duration of one - 30-60 min with progress check.
- Bet closer to 0. 25–0. 5% BR (if allowed).
- Control your bet limit and the list of allowed games.
- Evaluation of the "price" of the game: 'Bonus × Wager × edge (games)' is your benchmark of budget and number of sessions.
11) Three ready presets
A. Calm playtime
Rate: 1% BR; Speed: 10-14 sp/min;
Duration: 60-80 min (~ 700-1000 spins);
SL/TP: −20% / +30%; pause 20 min.
B. High-Vol hit hunt
Bet: 0. 25–0. 5% BR; Speed: 6-10 sp/min (no turbo);
Duration: 30-50 min (~ 300-500 spins);
SL/TP: −30…−40% / +60…+150%; pauses more often.
C. Wager × 35
Bet: 0. 25–0. 5% BR;
Sessions of 30-60 minutes; control of the bet limit and allowed games;
Plan the number of sessions from the formula "cost": 'Bonus × Wager × edge'.
12) Algorithm "in 60 seconds"
1. Define the goal: playtime/hits/replay.
2. Learn edge/RTP and game volatility.
3. Select the rate in% of BR and estimate the speed (P/min).
4. Calculate the duration reference: 'T ≈/( Loss budget/edge )/( Rate × P/min)'.
5. Set the SL/TP and time timer.
6. After the session - a short pause + recording of the turnover/total; reduce rate or T if necessary.
13) Frequent errors
"The game will not fight back yet" → the absence of an end ⇒ acceleration of turnover and expected losses.
Fixed amount instead of% BR - after drawdown, the share secretly grows.
Turbo speed on high-vol - explodes the "price of the hour" and tilt.
Ignoring the actual RTP/slot version (96% versus 92% - other duration math).
The optimal duration is a figure derived from your target, volatility and risk budget. Count the turnover through speed and time, bet hard SL/TP, keep the bet as a percentage of the current bankroll and play in series. This approach reduces the expected losses, saves psychology and makes the game predictable in time and risk.
